I've been so wrapped up in writing my book
about blogging that I've neglected to
keep up with my blogs.
But while doing research, I received a pitch
about a woman who was an early blogger
on Diaryland and turned her blog into a
book called "Dish It Up Baby."
And on her blog, there is a Book Meme.
Voila! Inspiration to blog! So here it is...
1. Total number of books owned.
I have to make a wild guess but I do know I have
maybe a dozen boxes of books with over 50 in
each box so conservatively maybe 600+.
Knowing me, I actually think that 1000 is a
better guess. I'm a book-a-holic.
Bookstores are my vice. I walk in just to
browse and come out with a handful of
books. I go in for 1 book and come out
with nearly a dozen. I'd say 1 out of 12
books I own has been read. And they are
now all in boxes so continue to be unread.
2. Last book bought.
I had to go onto Amazon.com to double
check. I have been very frugal lately
(well, trying to be) so other than some
books as gifts purchased in March and
April (those don't count), here is my
February book purchase:
Shaking the Money Tree: How to Get Grants and Donations for Film and Video by Morrie Warshawski
Luscious Lemon by Heather Swain
Inconceivable : A Woman's Triumph over Despair and Statistics by Julia Indichova
Coming to Term : Uncovering the Truth About Miscarriage by Jon Cohen
I think I may have also snuck into
Barnes and Noble a few times after that
and purchased some more books but
I've blocked them out of my mind.
I'm still in denial about my overspending.
3. Last book read
Yikes, I have no memory of reading a book
recently. Then again, I do recall making my
way through Inconceivable by Julia Indichova
and finding it to be moving and inspiring.
So that must have been the last
book I read.
On my nightstand, I do have A Heartbreaking
Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers.
I have no idea why - I usually read books
for, by or about women. But the title really
grabbed me (this was a Barnes & Noble
purchase) and glancing at the text inside
struck me as unusual so I figured I should
expand my mind.
4. Five books that mean a lot
Like I have a good enough memory to remember
anything I've read in the past. I have read so
little in the last few years because I'm busy
writing, living, spending money, producing.
Bad excuses. Okay, let's see...
Inconceivable
It helped me feel like I could overcome
my body.
Cowboys Are My Weakness by Pam Houston
It helped me realize that I could write the
way I write and it was okay. And that I could
fictionalize my own life and have strong stories.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
by Robert M. Pirsig
When I first read it, I didn't realize it was
about mental illness - it just spoke to me
on a visceral level and made me yearn
for the open road.
Miles from Nowhere by Barbara Savage
The first travelogue adventure that transported
me and inspired me to travel. I cried at the end
to learn that Barbara was killed on her bike
a few miles from her home after her
extraordinary bike adventures around
the world.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Opened my mind to the wonders of science
fiction/fantasy (after Ray Bradbury, of course).
I lived each moment with her characters
and felt that I could leave this planet while
reading her books.
