bringing you back into the conversation happening
on a posting board elsewhere, I had to comment
on one of the poster's remarks where they said
the fact that the Britney Spear's movie "Crossroad"
mentioning miscarriage proves it is not a taboo
topic. I had to respond...
Their post:
...and if I can make just one las road trip jab, if you google miscarriage and road trip, the first page brings up Britney Spears' movie Crossroads, a road story in which one of the characters deals with miscarriage. How anyone can claim niscarriage is taboo when it's fodder for a Britney Spears movie is beyond me....
My response:
First of all, since when is a topic in REAL LIFE not a taboo just because Hollywood - or Britney Spears for that matter - happens to mention it? And doesn't it matter in what context the topic is portrayed, discussed or otherwise described for public consumption?
Now that I've had time to sleep on it, I have to comment on id's ''road trip jab'' which is really an miscarriage jab that I find incredibly ignorant.
I googled, like id said, and found the review of ''Crossroads'' where it mentions miscarriage in this context:
'' Those who find Spears a bad role model will doubtlessly find her movie debut an occasion to be offended. Here's a story that features date rape, a miscarriage, a discussion of what it's like to touch a penis, and a scene in which Spears attempts to lose her virginity (in a later scene, she actually succeeds). Pretty appalling stuff to be selling to kids, but even more appalling is the fact that Crossroads is just plain bad.''
So Miscarriage (and Date Rape, BTW) is lumped in with other sexual topics and considered both ''appalling'' and an ''occasion to be offended.'' Hmmm...not a very helpful, educational or thoughtful portrayal of miscarriage.
I haven't seen the movie yet and will do so for my own research but did a further google search to find more details about how miscarriage was portrayed in Crossroads.
Some highlights - and you tell me if you think this is proving that miscarriage is no longer taboo and is being covered well in the media...
Seems like the movie might minimize miscarriage based on this review:
'' In this very melodramatic period we get abandonment, date rape, infidelity, and even a miscarriage in one of the film's most shameless plot devices. Of course none of these horrors matter, especially a psychologically damaging miscarriage, because Britney has to get to her BIG audition in order to perform''
This review makes it sounds like miscarriage is a teen issue:
''The movie tackles difficult teen issues such as first-time sex, unwanted pregnancy, implied date rape, miscarriage, and love--all while Spears's character Lucy is on a cross-country trek to find her estranged mother''
It seems the miscarriage in the movie occurs after the woman falls down a flight of stairs:
''Meanwhile, various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, while various characters throw a few punches at others, and a young, pregnant woman falls down a flight of stairs, resulting in miscarriage.''
90%+ of miscarriages do not happen due to trauma or falling down stairs - they happen for no apparent reason, happen suddenly and unexpectedly, and often no amount of testing can give a reason for why it happened. Imagine living with that. Much less definitive than a fall down the stairs. Much more complex and traumatic than Britney and her movie seem to portray. And this is helping other women how...?
Yes, I believe we are all entitled to our opinions. That's why I'm expressing mine - off topic, yet again.
