I've been sending queries out to various
publications about writing an article about
miscarriage. I've taken a variety of approaches,
each one tailored for the publication and
audience.
Have not heard back from anyone. I'm not
surprised not to hear back from the biggies
(SELF, OPRAH, etc) but not even my favorite
feminist pubs (BUST) have responded.
I did hear back from a feminist book publisher
(SEAL PRESS) and they are not interested in
the topic. Hmmmm...when a feminist publisher
won't even give you encouragement, you know
you are treading in taboo waters.
I wasn't surprised not to hear back from
pregnancy magazines - because they are out
to make pregnancy look easy and feminine.
Health magazines are probably afraid an article
about miscarriage will turn off their male readers.
Even though men are often partners to a woman
who is miscarrying.
I'm flummoxed, stymied and all around frustrated
by this wall of resistance to anything that sounds
like miscarriage.
Anyone have any thoughts, suggestions or read
any good miscarriage articles lately? Maybe there
has been a glut of them, and I'm not keeping up
with my reading.
I can't understand it. There are so many that have been through it, there's no reason to ignore it. I admire what you're doing and pray that someone recognizes your attempts for what they are.......
Something that has been needed for a VERY long time.

Have you tried Bitch magazine (feminist takes on pop culture) or Brain,Child: The Magazine for Thinking Mothers? I haven't seen anything on m/c in Brain,Child recently, but I know that they have included essays on pregnancy loss in their "Greatest Hits" anthology.
